Even after five decades in the spotlight, Bob Dylan continues to outrage and excite music lovers around the world. His recent tour of China and Vietnam even sparked anti-Dylan editorials. Dylan has inspired successive generations with some of pop music’s best-known melodies coupled with his insightful lyrics of love, power struggles, politics and social justice. In a salute to Dylan’s 70th birthday (on May 24), Ashkenaz presents “Doing Dylan,” a night of mostly familiar fare done with personal flair by a plethora of our finest local roots and rock performers, from Country Joe McDonald singing “Masters of War” to David Gans doing “Mr. Tambourine Man.”

This special night of song is a benefit for Ashkenaz, a nonprofit local institution, which for nearly four decades has hosted live world and roots music by performers from near and far and has served as a gathering place for diverse communities of music, dance, and culture. Join tonight’s performers in celebrating Dylan as well as supporting Ashkenaz!

Musicians will perform solo and in various groupings, and even with a band or two, as well as sitting in with each other throughout the concert. In addition to Country Joe and David Gans, the lineup includes Chris Rowan (of the Rowan Brothers and Rubber Souldiers), Eric & Suzy Thompson (Aux Cajunals, Bluegrass Intentions, and countless other bands), Stu Allen (Melvin Seals & JGB, Front Street, Workingman’s Ed), Pat Nevins (Ragged Glory, Workingman’s Ed), veteran folk and roots singer/guitarist Johnny Harper, blues guitar master Marc Silber, Michael Berry and Mike Jensen (both of Dedicated Maniacs), Graham Patzner (Whiskerman), Joe Balestreri (The Flux), Tippy Canoe, Sean Hodge (High Heat), and more!

Each singer/band will do at least a couple of Dylan’s compositions. Among the songs they plan to cover are “Oxford Town,” “The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll,” “Idiot Wind,” “Positively Fourth Street,” “Most Likely You Go Your Way and I’ll Go Mine.”

More than any other popular composer, Bob Dylan continues to see his songs pop up on new recordings. Dylan’s pre-fame “Brandeis University 1963” concert was just issued on CD, Berkeley’s great wine merchant and blues singer Kermit Lynch covered “Winterlude” on his new “Kitty Fur” CD, and this month Red House Records put out its all-star roster “A Nod to Bob 2” with artists including Jimmy LaFave and Hot Tuna. “Doing Dylan” isn’t available on any recording, though; it happens only once, tonight at Ashkenaz!

  • If science could clone Lenny Gill, the Bay Area would have one heck of an all-star band with Lenny on bass, Lenny on guitar, Lenny on drums, and Lenny as lead singer. Oh, and the professional music teacher who taught the band to rock? That would be Lenny, too!

Unfortunately Lenny has not spent the last few months in the hospital being replicated, but instead has undergone a series of major procedures to correct heart issues and the repercussions of triple bypass surgery. This has taken quite a toll on his livelihood, but his current and former band mates in The Bye Bye Blackbirds, Overwhelming Colorfast, Jolly, Happy Regrets and his wide array of musical pals are joining forces to perform at a benefit. All proceeds from the event go directly to helping him regain stability and facilitate a speedy return to a stage near you.

Sister-like harmonies and a merry-go-round of guitar, ukulele, washboard, and bass propel their Americana sound. The name was derived from their first tour’s final destination: a cupcake bakery in Olympia, WA and “The Cupcake Diaries” stuck. On their musical journey they combine a thirst for exploration and revel in the delight of their colorful lives like Thelma & Louise on a sugar-high. They each have a background in power-pop and melodic punk to add a sharp edge to the sweetness.

Michele (a/k/a Tippy) in other bands

THE SHARK ALLEY HOBOS
Singer, songwriter, guitarist, and San Francisco Bay Area treasure, Mikie Lee Prasad (aka Drunky McGee), followed the stars and gathered a ragged band of his most trusted musicians who shared a love of the sea, sharks, pirates, New Orleans, and hobos. Out of this grog-infused meeting was born California’s premiere sea shanty and sing-a-long band: the Shark Alley Hobos. Drawing upon timeless ballads of the sea, modern day spirits-inspired sing-a-longs, and original songs of wanderlust and debauchery, the Shark Alley Hobos will have you shivering your timbers and raising a glass to good friends and good times. This group of ne'er do wells, with their passion and punctuality, have led many an awestruck bartender to lament, "We're gonna need a bigger bar." Come join Drunky McGee, Squinty Brown, One Eyed Jack, Bongo, Jackson, Shameless Seamus, Tipsy Canoe, and Bloody Pisser for an evening you'll wish you could remember.
